On my December stay in Venice, however, I managed to get in. Alas, whenever I've gone to the entrance over the past decade, the door has been locked. The campanile seems to be in better shape but could also use some restoration work. It displays crumbling bricks and peeling paint. Sometimes I simply sit at a bench across from the church, watching boys engaged in a soccer match.Įach time I've been in the square, I've wondered if the interior matches the poor condition of the facade. I've looked at the exterior often when I've been in the square, shopping at the Coop supermarket, eating at a nearby restaurant, or buying marvelous pastries to go from Majer. During our Venice visits, we stay about a 7-minute walk from this 13th-century church, which is located in a charming small square by a canal.
